Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) has been awarded £10,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund following a successful bid to the Together for Our Planet funding programme.
The awarding of the fund recognises HDC for producing a project plan which is one of 500 projects across the UK to be chosen and supported by the Together for Our Planet campaign. The campaign aims to improve education on carbon and to support projects impacting carbon reduction as a legacy of COP26.
The District Council's project, submitted for Huntingdon Riverside, includes:
- An educational stall with information on how the public can reduce carbon through urban greening and sustainable travel
- A Citizens Science project where the public will be able to monitor CO2 levels in Riverside Park to visualise the real-time impact
- Volunteer planting of high absorption plants with education signage
- A follow-up educational stall and Citizens Science workshop to monitor the impact of planting and urban greening
- Public communications with data and impact
Executive Leader of the Council, Councillor Ryan Fuller, said: "Protecting and managing the environment in Huntingdonshire is high on our agenda, having previously been awarded £1.35 million to support biodiversity across the district allowing us to invest in nature locally and enhance our local environment. We are continuing to follow through on our intentions to support the environment of the district with real action and this funding award is the next step for us locally."
The District Council is currently running a public survey to develop a new Environmental Strategy, capturing the input of residents and local stakeholders which allows for the creation of a forward plan suited for the people and the district focussing on a green recovery.
