Conservative Candidate for the Huntingdon constituency, Jonathan Djanogly has today (9 December) welcomed the opening of the new A14 Southern Bypass.
This new 12-mile bypass to the south of Huntingdon is part of a £1.5 billion project to upgrade the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon. Last month, the Government announced that the bypass would open to traffic a full year ahead of schedule.
Mr Djanogly also welcomed the news that work on the rest of the project, the biggest road upgrade currently under construction in the UK, is on schedule to be completed as planned by December 2020.
Commenting on the opening, Mr Djanogly said:
“Having been at the forefront of the campaign to upgrade the A14 for over a decade, I certainly welcome the opening of this new route, which marks an enormous step forward in the delivery of this major infrastructure upgrade.
“Following many years of lobbying the then-Labour government to see the benefits of such a scheme, I am delighted that a Conservative government could deliver this element of the project ahead of schedule.
“This new bypass will improve safety for road users and provide the infrastructure necessary to develop our local and regional businesses. Commuters, residents and visitors will see the real benefits of reduced journey times and improved links across our area and to neighbouring regions. It is a fine example of Conservative policies delivering for people in practice.’
“While I'm glad many people have already been able to benefit from the new route, I am aware of the concerns some commuters have expressed this morning. While teething problems are to be expected in such circumstances, I will continue to work with Highways England to monitor these situations and ensure a smooth transition as drivers adapt to the new layout.
“Now, we must build on this success. I am committed to delivering an upgraded A428, further A1 improvements and an East-West Rail route that will benefit St Neots. These projects will ensure Huntingdonshire has the infrastructure necessary to support our future growth, protect the interests of our local businesses and provide a better quality of life for everyone.”
