Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) is supporting Hinchingbrooke Hospital with £271k of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.
At a meeting of HDC Cabinet members on Thursday 17 March, it was agreed CIL funding would be granted to help support Hinchingbrooke's plans to build a new operating theatres block with seven theatres, which will support projected growth in the population and enable future proofing.
This project is the second phase of a three-phase plan for the hospital. The first phase was the expansion of Urgent Care, which was completed in November 2020, and the second and third phases will see further transformation of the hospital's facilities and infrastructure to make sure Hinchingbrooke continues to meet the needs of local people.
Executive Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, Cllr Ryan Fuller, said: "CIL funding is a great way for us to help deliver improvements to infrastructure and community facilities across the district, ensuring that we can make positive impacts to the lives and livelihoods of residents.
"I am very pleased that we are supporting this project as it will help with the modernisation of the hospital's facilities and will benefit the health and wellbeing of Huntingdonshire's residents now and in the future."
Arshiya Khan, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and who is leading the hospital's redevelopment programme, said: "The news of this funding approval is very welcome and reflects the positive support Huntingdonshire District Council has provided to our hospital to help us develop services that are ready for the future needs of our communities."
CIL is a planning charge placed on developers that allows local authorities to assist in the funding and delivery of infrastructure development within the local area. The use of CIL funds highlights our commitment to supporting the development of infrastructure that enables district-wide and localised growth as well as improving the supply of new and affordable housing, jobs and vital community facilities.
